Which Speedo Gear To Use With New Rear End Gears

Which Speedo Gear To Use With New Rear End Gears - Whenever you change the rear end gears to another ratio (e.g. 2.73's to 4.10's) you have to change the speedometer gear too. Why?

Whenever you change the rear end gears to another ratio (e.g. 2.73's to 4.10's) you have to change the speedometer gear too. Why? Because when you change the rear end gears you also change the ratio between how fast the speedo gear is spinning and how fast the car is actually going.

Here is a chart to figure out which speedometer gear you will need.

  1983-89 1990-93 1994-95 1983-1998
Gear Ratio 5 speed 5 speed 5 speed AOD
3.27:1 19 21 21 19
3.55:1 20 23 23 20
3.73:1 21 23* 23* 21
4.10:1 23* 23* 23* N/A**

*With these gears a 23 tooth speedo gear can be used, but isn't accurate. The only way to get these ratios completely accurate is by either changing the transmission drive gear, or by using a speed reducer gear box which is basically an adapter that lets you use different gears.

**To use 4.10's (or a higher gear) with an AOD you'll need an adapter, and to use 4.10s or higher with an AODE you'll need an aftermarket computer chip.

  • Although this may seem very basic to many people, some people don't even know the easy way to check fuses. I've seen people suffer through the big pain of taking each and every fuse out one at a time to see if any of them are burnt. There's a lot easier way of checking fuses without taking them out.

Ever notice that fuses have two small metal "tabs" on top of them? Those "tabs" or prongs are for checking them with a tester. You can buy a specific tester for this task but an ordinary 12V tester will work.
