Throttle Position Sensor Adjustment

To set your TPS you will need a couple basic hand tools:

  • A Phillips head screw driver
  • A digital multi-meter
  • A drill & small drill bit (If this is your first time adjusting it)

Throttle Position Sensor adjustment is a very basic but often asked question. The benefits of resetting the TPS is as follows:

  • Increased throttle response
  • Smoother idle (when you are lean at idle)
  • Can be used to compensate for a rich or lean idle
  • EEC will reach wide open throttle operation sooner resulting in faster acceleration

To locate the sensor open the hood & look towards your passenger side strut tower. Locate the throttle body attached to the intake & the sensor attached to the top of it. This is the TPS Sensor, two Philips head screws hold it down. To adjust it you will to have your ignition on but not with the car running, this will energize the EEC & the sensors. To check the setting as it is you will need to use a digital multi-meter, & some basic wiring knowledge. The Black wire is your ground the orange is your 5 volt reference wire & the green is the EEC feed wire. Probe the green wire with the positive lead & the black lead to the black wire. You may see readings from the mid .70v up to 1.0+v, the range that it is typically set at is .95-1.00v.

Loosen the top two screws & turn it clockwise or counter clockwise until you get it in the specified voltage range. If you cannot get it into adjustment as it is you will need to remove the sensor from the car. Once removed from the car use the small drill bit to elongate the holes in a crescent shape. Reattach it to the vehicle, & adjust it until it reads Between .95-.97v . Tighten down the two screws & turn off the key. You do not need to reset the EEC, as it is really not necessary.

You may be asking, "What is a TPS"? Simply put its a Throttle Position Sensor. The TPS is a sensor that tells the ECM (computer) how much gas you are giving it, which in turn lets the computer decide how much fuel and spark to give you.

  • 11 - System pass
    12 - RPM unable to reach upper test limit
    13 - RPM unable to reach lower test limit
    14 - Pip circuit failure
    15 - PCM read only memory test failed

  • (O) = Key On Engine Off test
    (R) = Key On Engine Running test
    (M) = Memory code

    Note: Some codes may only be for certain model cars. So if you see something about 1.9L cars disregard it.

  • When I first bought my 'Stang I always had problems with the idle. No matter what I did it always went up and down, up and down, up....uh, you get the point. After performing a full tune up, which included changing the spark plugs, plug wires, fuel filter, air filter (k&n), cap, rotor, and setting the timing and tps voltage I was disappointed to find that the car still had a lousy idle. So what's next? Try changing the idle air bypass solenoid (IAB)? I was about to, until I noticed that the throttle plate in the Throttle body was so dirty that you could barely see the edges of the plate.

  • These codes are pplicable only to some 1991 and up vehicles.

    Note: Some codes are for specific model cars only, so diregard anything about 1.9L cars...LOL

    Differences in test mode noted as:

    (O) =Key On Engine Off test
    (R) =Key On Engine Running test
    (M) =Memory code

    111 System checks OK

    112 (O,M) Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor is/was low or grounded -

    113 (O,M) IAT sensor is/was high or open -

    114 (O,R) IAT sensor out of range -
