FORD POWER! 1965-70 Mustang Wheel/Tire Fitment

Halibrand Engineering's Rick Ciemeny researched the Mustang wheel/tire sizing issue.

Basic Formula: Backspacing minus (Wheel Width divided by 2) = Offset

For optimum results, he suggests living within the parameters of the following tables:

Wheel selection boils down to proper sizing. Ideally, your wheel store will allow you the opportunity to check wheel fitment prior to purchase. If that isn't possible, you must correctly measure both wheel and vehicle first. Backspacing and offset are as important as wheel diameter. Wheel backspacing (A) should be in the 4-inch to 4.75-inch backspace range, depending on vehicle type. Offset is the distance from the wheel face to the outer lip. Wheel width (B) is measured from rim to rim as shown.

    Use the chart below to see how much net horsepower is required to run the elapsed time you want. To obtain the rear wheel horsepower simply multiply the number by 0.85. Example: If your car weight is 3,000 pounds and you want to run a 12 flat, the required net horsepower is 343 or the rear wheel horsepower required is 343 x 0.85 = 292.

    Installation Steps:

    1. Paint Aero Shield with flexible paint of the same type used for Mustang bumper covers & Classic Side Pipe Covers. [The Aero Shield can be effectively integrated if it is two-toned to match the rear bumper insert. Consider low gloss black, like the GT series, for light colors, or light argent (silver) for dark colors.]
    2. Your fuel gauge should read 1/8 or less. Gas is heavy; a light tank makes for an easier installation.
    3. Raise car. The Aero Shield can be installed on a driveway apron, jack stands are better, a hoist is best.
    4. Remove the two rear wheel/tire assemblies.
    5. Remove the black vacuum formed plastic tub from under the fuel tank:

    1970 Mustangs were mildly restyled. Headlight configuration reverted to a single seven-inch lamp on each side, this time inside the grille opening, Simulated scoops took the place of the outside headlights. The rear taillight panel was flat rather than concave and the taillights are recessed.
